3 Benefits of Self Care: Energy, Edge, and Endurance

More often than not the average individual neglects to focus on self-care. As a working society we have learned to convince ourselves that there isn’t enough time in the day to take care our ourselves. What we fail to realize is without self-care, we are limiting our success to become stronger, healthy leaders. Earlier this year, I had the privilege of attending Leadercast Live 2018. During this event I was humbly inspired by many of the successful speakers, but one speaker left me feeling especially motivated.

Michael Hyatt is a well-known Leadership Mentor who is guided to “help high achievers win at work, succeed at life, and lead with confidence.” Michael understands the importance of self-care and during his lecture at Leadercast 2018 he presented his audience with 3 tips about self-care and some of the common excuses associated with them.

Self Care Gives You Energy

Common excuse: “I don’t have enough time!” Remember — you are not a robot! You are a person who needs their energy to give it your all in the work industry. Set aside some time for yourself, take a mini vacation and allow your self to breath. Through self-care you will begin to see results and your energy levels will be lifted.

Common excuse: “Self care seems indulgent”

I must admit…I’ve used this excuse more often then none. I am someone who will put work before myself. More recently I have found myself working additional hours at home even after my regular workday, resulting in late nights. Hyatt teaches that it’s important to get at least 7 or more hours of sleep each night, add in some time to exercise and by doing this it will leave you feeling rejuvenated and will fuel creativity.

Self Care Gives You Endurance

With this third tip on self-care Hyatt challenges his viewers to ask themselves the following questions and to set 3 goals for better self-care:

  1. Do you want one-dimensional success or multi-dimensional success?
  2. Do you want momentary or sustained success?

Goals:

  1. Make a commitment to care for yourself.
  2. Set boundaries!
  3. Set a goal of sleeping 8 hours a night.
