The Best Staycations in Frederick County

frederick staycations

You know the saying there’s no place like home? Here at Sass we love that phrase, simply because we get to call Frederick our home. It’s not a secret that Frederick County is beautiful — it’s one of the many reasons we choose to live here! But it’s easy to get stuck in a rut doing the same things you always do— walking around the same park, shopping at the same mall and grabbing coffee at the same cafe.

We’d like to challenge you to view the Frederick area a little differently. Why not save your coveted vacation days and opt for a getaway weekend in town? Our top picks for staycations in Frederick include the perfect mix of the outdoors, hotel suites, massages and more. Mix and match events and places to make your weekend itinerary as memorable as possible!

FOR THE NATURE LOVERS

Camp Out
There’s no better way to greet springtime than by spending time with the great outdoors. Put on your hiking boots and explore Camp Misty Mount, located in the hardwood forests on the slopes of Catoctin Mountain Park. Hot showers, flush toilets and drinking water are located inside each campsite loop, ensuring cleanliness while you ruff it. Discover the mountain views and clear streams on the nearby trailhead for Wolf Rock, the only part of the park that allows rock climbing and rappelling. Camp Misty Mount connects to many other hiking trails as well. Visit Recreation.gov to discover other amenities and attractions and to book your reservation.

Smell the Lavender
It’s no secret that lavender does wonders to eliminate stress. The flowers are also easy on the eyes, especially in a field of purple. Mark your calendars for the Maryland Lavender Festival at Springfield Manor on June 17. Vendors, live music, food, wine and distilled spirits are added bonuses of the festival. Want to spend your whole weekend taking in the picturesque views? Make a reservation at The Inn, located on the same property as the festival.

FOR THE ANTIQUE LOVERS

Stay and Shop Where the History Is
Located five miles south of Frederick’s historic downtown area, the Frederick Inn Bed and Breakfast features original architectural details, dating all the way back to 1897. Sipping coffee by the fireplace or outside on the veranda is the perfect start to a day of antique shopping. Stay on the third weekend of the month to get the most bang for your buck, as most antique shops around Frederick are only open once a month,  including Sweet Clover and Chartreuse & co. Both offer tag sales on the third weekend of each month, boasting vintage home décor and handmade pieces. No matter your personal style, you’ll be sure to leave with something you love.

Antebellum Dining
We could spend hours shopping for the perfect item, so we know you will too. You’ll want need a tasty meal to unwind and recharge after a day of antique hunting. Modern meets tradition at Alexanders at Buckeystown where Chef Smallwood cooks up Southern cuisine, preparing the barbecue on site and handcrafting Nutella ice cream every day. The ambiance of the dining room is as great as the food, featuring a collection of Civil War statues created by John Rogers.

FOR THE RESTSEEKERS

Relax in Luxury
Stay in the heart of the city to indulge yourself in Victorian comfort at 10 Clarke Place. Release all your worries over the three-course gourmet breakfast or by sipping wine in the backyard garden. 10 Clarke also offers soothing massages by their in-house masseur and walking history tours of Frederick, led by a 20-year veteran of the park service. It’s also steps away from some of the best restaurants in town. Top off your relaxing weekend by eating at Volt, Vini Culture, AYSE Meze Lounge or The Tasting Room, all within walking distance of the inn.

Treat Yourself
City Magnolia is ranked as Frederick’s number one daytime spa on Yelp, and for good reason. Spa packages allow customers to choose the services they want, all differing in prices and time. We recommend the Southern Comfort Package ($192), which includes a 55-minute facial, a 55-minute Swedish massage, and a spa lunch.

If you’re really pressed for time, skip the spa and go straight to Anam Cara Apothecary. Under the direction of a master clinical aromatherapist, Apothecary handcrafts topical oil remedies to support the immune system, women’s health, digestion, anxiety and more. In your relaxed bliss, you may even find a deeper appreciation for the place we love to call home.
